Music Monday: RoBERT – Ange et Démon

Good day and Happy Monday to you all!

Today we’ll be looking at a song by singer RoBERT.

“An independent artist and songwriter, RoBERT's musical style is described as fairy-like, halfway between the tragic and the gothic, sometimes with a pinch of nonsense. Themes of death, childhood, and love regularly appear in her songs, marked by her crystalline, often fragile opera voice and the baroque (and sometimes electronic) music...”

Oh RoBERT, why had I not discovered you before?

On Saturday, while going through my YouTube subscriptions, I watched Michelle Phan’s latest video, 4 Different Chinese Girl Looks. In her video, she used the song Ange et Démon by RoBERT. Yes, I’m one of those people who finds new music through make-up tutorial videos

Here is the music video for the song:

Haunting music, taxidermy and stop motion animation, yes, I am in love with this video The little details in the video are charming, many of which I missed the first time watching the video, due to quality of the video on YouTube, like the blood dripping from the hung rabbits onto the leopard skin on the floor.

Also, the song was used in a commercial:

And the fact that the song is in French does not take away from the song for me but rather adds to it. I know some people would be bothered by listening to a song that was not in their own language or even a song where they could not understand the lyrics, but there’s so much more to a song that just the lyrics! And if you’re limiting yourself to the English language, you’re missing out on some amazing artists!

That all being said, the first thing I attempted to look for after listening to the song was to try and find the English translation of the lyrics. I didn’t have much luck, much like when I was looking for the lyrics to La Fille Damnee.

Through YouTube, I was able to find the translation for the first part of the song. YouTube user Aoscadin provided part of the translation in the comments section of the music video.

Do you think I'm angel or demon?
It's my secret.

Nobody really knows what I am
When slipped on my neck the collar of your hands
This ephemeral dress too tight for my taste
My breath runs out
That thou unbind I slide into your arms, here I am at your feet
More dead than reason
My angel, my demon

Yes it's love at first sight
You fell from heaven
And take my life, you gave me wings
I'm Angel and Demon and am ready to fight
And you beat the wing and fall into a swoon

Now once more, like when I posted the La Fille Damnee, I challenge you my dear guests, for those of you who know French, do you think you would be able to share with us the full French to English translation of this song? The interwebs will love you for it *wink*

Stay Spooky,
